BBQs and picnics: How to look after your teeth this summer

BBQ season is finally here, bringing with it many of our favourite summer foods and drinks. While enjoying these seasonal treats, it’s easy to overlook your oral health.

However, with a few simple habits, you can keep your teeth healthy all summer long without missing out on the fun. (1)

Be mindful of summer foods

Halloumi, chicken wings, glazed sausages and ribs are all popular BBQ favourites, but their sticky marinades and glazes contain ingredients which can lowers your mouth’s PH, making your teeth more prone to enamel erosion. (2)

Many of these coatings also contain additional sugars, which can weaken tooth enamel over time. (2)

If left unchecked, this can increase the risk of cavities and other dental problems, leading to discomfort and frustration. Choose lower-sugar sauces where possible, and rinse with water after eating to help remove trapped food particles. (4)

Balance these indulgent treats with foods that help support good oral health. Lean proteins, crunchy vegetables, cheese and other dairy products are all excellent choices, as they provide essential nutrients that help strengthen teeth and maintain healthy enamel. (3)

Watch what you drink

It is easy to forget about oral health when you are enjoying your favourite summer drinks.

Cocktails, fruity drinks, soda and iced coffees may be refreshing, but many contain sugar and acids that can contribute to cavities and enamel erosion if consumed often. (5)

Don’t forget between your teeth

Cleaning between your teeth is just as important as brushing the surfaces. Floss and interdental brushes help remove plaque and bacteria from the small gaps your toothbrush cannot reach, making them an important part of a thorough dental routine. (6)

Although brushing twice a day is essential for healthy teeth, adding flossing to your routine offers extra protection for your oral health. (7)

Pack oral care essentials for your summer plans

It is a good idea to pack the cleaning aids you use every day when heading to summer events or days out. (8) Whatever your plans, bringing essentials such as floss, dental picks, a toothbrush and mouthwash can help ensure your teeth and gums are properly cared for while you are away from home. (9)

Always refer to full product information before use. See a professional if problems arise or persist.
